The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, announced Tuesday the imposition of a one kilometer “containment area” and a half around the town of New Rochelle, in Westchester County, where it is found the largest “focus of infection” of coronavirus in the country.
“It is a dramatic action, but it is the biggest focus of the country and it’s a matter of life or death“Cuomo said at a press conference, in which he indicated that the measure will take effect on March 12 and that will end on the 25th of this month.
During these two weeks, schools, department stores and places where large groups of people can gather will be closed, said Cuomo, who will deploy the National Guard to help in the containment and treatment of the coronavirus.
New Rochelle “it is the biggest health challenge we have at this time in the state and we need a special strategy, “said the governor before explaining that the members of the National Guard will be in charge, among other things, of providing assistance to citizens, delivering food and helping with disinfection efforts.
“Cleaning the surfaces (which may be contaminated by the coronavirus) is very important,” he stressed.
Cuomo also announced the installation of an analysis laboratory in the area to prevent residents from using public transportation services. New Rochelle is less than 30 minutes by train to New York City.
Likewise, Cuomo welcomed that federal authorities have allowed the Northwell Health private medical center to carry out automatic tests for the coronavirus in its facilities, which will considerably increase the number of tests that can be performed daily.
On the other hand, the governor of New York reported that the number of cases throughout the state has risen in the last hours to 173, so there are 31 more cases than this Monday.
A total of 108 infected people are in Weschester County, where New Rochelle is located, another 36 in New York, 19 in Nassau, 6 in Rockland, 2 in Saratoga and 1 in both Suffolk and Ulster counties.
