News 24 | Study: Being overweight increases your chances of surviving some deadly diseases

The results of a recent study, conducted by scientists from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, showed that being overweight can increase the chances of surviving some deadly diseases.

And the team of researchers revealed, according to the British “The Sun”, that the study conducted on 2196 people showed that those who had a large waist circumference were less likely to die from severe bacterial infections.

The study showed that 26% of patients with severe bacterial infections who were of normal weight died within a year, compared to 9.17% for groups with a higher body mass index.

The author of the study, Dr. Aisa Aliso, explains that in most diseases, obesity and being overweight are a serious matter, which applies to several types of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and in particular to Covid-19. BMI has higher mortality rates, but it is different with severe bacterial infections.

Co-author of the study, Dr. Gunnar Jacobson, believes that “more trials are needed to shed light on how body weight affects the body’s defenses against infection so that treatment can be customized.”
