For six months there was a ceasefire in Yemen’s civil war, which has been going on for years. The ceasefire is now expiring, and the warring parties were unable to agree on an extension. The UN wants to continue negotiations.

The ceasefire in Yemen will not be extended for the time being. According to the United Nations, the warring parties have not been able to agree to extend the ceasefire after six months. The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, regretted this and said he would continue to campaign for an agreement. “An extended and expanded ceasefire would have given the population decisive advantages.”

The Swedish diplomat called on the warring parties “to fulfill their obligation to the Yemeni people and to pursue every path towards peace”.

Worst humanitarian crisis in the world according to the UN

The ceasefire came into effect in April and been extended twice. She had given the people of the country a breathing space in the war that had been going on since 2014. An alliance of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia is fighting with Yemeni government troops against the Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran.

According to the UN, around 380,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, most of them as a direct result of the fighting. Millions more people had to flee. The UN classifies the war and its consequences in Yemen as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
