Munich – Uli Burchardt, the previous mayor of Konstanz, was confirmed in his office in the runoff election on Sunday. The CDU candidate won 49.5 percent of the vote and prevailed against his challenger Luigi Pantisano from the Left Party, who got 45.1 percent. The election was eagerly awaited because Pantisano was 2.5 percentage points ahead of Burchardt in the first ballot. Pantisano would have been the first left lord mayor in a West German city. The third candidate in the runoff election, the non-party business economist Andreas Matt, ended up in third place with 5.1 percent.
