While Facebook has just announced that it will stop the Rift S after the Go, Oculus is taking advantage of Facebook Connect 2020 to announce its new Virtual Reality headset intended for the general public and completely autonomous. Here is the Oculus Quest 2.
WhileOculus had already stopped the Oculus Go, it was during this Facebook Connect that we also learned about the stop of the Oculus Rift S dedicated to PCs. But it’s a bad for a good since Oculus focuses on a single product with the successor of the Quest, here is theOculus Quest 2. The focus is clear, it’s VR time for the general public.
And like the new Oculus Quest 2 will be the representative of VR at Facebook, it incorporates new and most interesting features. In fact, Oculus calls it the most advanced autonomous virtual reality system on the market. If the Quest 2 sports a new colourway, it is especially smaller and lighter (503g) by 10% compared to its predecessor, which is practical for a stand-alone system that can operate without a PC or console. More concerned with user comfort, Oculus has integrated an adjustable IPD (interpupillary distance) with three settings for 58, 63 and 68mm. But that’s not all sinceOculus offers optional and customizable accessories for the user’s head.
To support the most greedy games and future productions, theOculus Quest 2 integrates a processor Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 (VR equivalent of Snapdragon 865). Alongside, the Quest 2 offers 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 256GB of internal memory, integrated speakers and microphone, 3D audio, a 3.5mm jack, an autonomy announced between 2 hours and 3 hours with a full recharge in 2h30. But where Oculus has decided to hit hard is with the new high-resolution display of the headset. Indeed, with a resolution of 1832 × 1920 per eye, that’s 50% more pixels compared to the Quest. But that’s not all since the Quest 2 offers 90Hz refresh rate (72Hz at launch) coming soon.
Completely autonomous, the Quest 2 benefits from the Oculus Quest ecosystem with a multitude of games and content already available. Always keen to provide more content, Oculus offers live concerts, films, but also exclusive events and new social experiences. Compatible Oculus Link, the Quest 2 can be used as an Oculus Rift to access your PC games in virtual reality. Likewise, the Touch controllers have been revised for better ergonomics and we find the classic features such as the Guardian system, Passthrough + and Hand Tracking.
Count 349 euros for the 64go version and 449 euros for the 256GB version. The Oculus Quest 2 will be available from October 13, 2020. As an option, we find the Oculus Link cable, a carrying case, an Elite Strap, an Elite Strap with integrated battery, interchangeable anti-light filters.
