odynophagia, a symptom that mainly affects vaccinated people

According to a Swedish study, this symptom of Omicron mainly affects young patients and vaccinated people.

A new symptom of Covid-19 has just been brought to light by a team of Swedish researchers. After headaches and fatigue, it is now odynophagia that is pointed. This disorder causes pain in the throat when swallowing. Young patients and vaccinated people would be the first to be affected.

“We have noticed an increase in requests for the care of several patients with Covid-19, for symptoms similar to those of epiglottitis”, explain the scientists. This infection of the epiglottis and surrounding tissues can lead to sudden airway obstruction and death.

Omicron seems to affect the upper respiratory tract

For this study, Dr. Pr Krzysztof Piersiala and his team from Stockholm University analyzed the profile of Covid-19 patients admitted to ENT departments between January 1 and 23, 2022. Out of 20 patients, 15 were completely vaccinated and four had to be hospitalized.

According to the results published in the journal National Library of Medicine, no cases of epiglottitis were identified among the study participants. Reported symptoms were closer to laryngotracheitis or pharyngitis, sore throat that can lead to pain when swallowing

“The previous variants exposed patients to significant respiratory problems and were associated with a loss of smell and taste in many of them, underline the scientists. The Omicron variant, on the other hand, seems to primarily affect the upper respiratory tract and cause laryngitis without disturbance of olfaction.”

The fifth wave of Covid-19, carried by the Omicron variant, is still ebbing in France. On Sunday, the number of deaths and new cases continues to decline, according to daily figures published by Public Health France. End of the mandatory mask in some places, a single test for contact cases… new reductions come into force on February 28 in parallel with this decline.
