As a contribution to the European Capital of Culture Salzkammergut 2024, the Natural History Museum Vienna will create a virtual museum about the history of salt mining in the region. Under the title “7000 years of salt” a virtual museum space is to be created in the form of an unrestrictedly accessible web app. Twelve museums will show the history of salt as digital showrooms and 23 more as panoramas or links. In addition, the Natural History Museum Vienna with its archive and the Upper Austrian State Archive are docked as higher-level digital museums. It is one of the most extensive virtual museum projects in Austria.

Governor Thomas Stelzer announced yesterday that the project would be funded with around 100,000 euros from the state’s cultural funds. The state government will make the necessary decision at today’s meeting. “The history of Upper Austria is also closely linked to the history of salt,” says Governor Stelzer, explaining the state’s commitment.
