The 27th edition of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) opened its doors this Saturday in Ouagadougou, in the presence of the Burkinabe Head of State and several African political and cultural figures, Xinhua noted on site.

This festival, which runs until October 23, is held under the theme: “Cinema of Africa and the Diaspora: new challenges”.

Out of more than 1,000 films registered, 239 films were selected for the official competition.

Senegal, which is the guest of honor, participates with 19 films including 14 in official competition.

Burkina Faso Culture Minister Elise Thiombiano said during the coronavirus pandemic, “movies and music have enabled the world to cope with containment.”

FESPACO was created in 1969 in Ouagadougou on the initiative of a group of moviegoers.

At the 26th edition held in March 2019, it was Rwandan director Joël Karekezi who won the Yennenga Gold Standard, the festival’s most prestigious award, with his film “The Mercy of the Jungle”.
