Opening of the flu vaccination to all French people this Monday

This Monday, November 22, all French people can now be vaccinated against the seasonal flu. The campaign is open until January 31, 2022 to non-priority audiences, after a month dedicated to fragile people, over 65s, pregnant women. All caregivers were also concerned.

For the “non-priority audiences”, vaccination is not covered by Health Insurance. You can therefore go to a pharmacy and buy the vaccine, without a prescription for adults, with a prescription from your general practitioner for minors. The pharmacist can immediately inject you with the vaccine, but the act will be billed for.

Every winter, two to six million people are affected by the influenza virus, accompanied by symptoms such as high fever, cough, pain, severe fatigue. It is difficult to know how many French people will be affected this year. Fears are particularly high with the resumption of the Covid-19 epidemic. Two simultaneous epidemics, influenza and Covid-19, would put the hospital system under strain. Especially since vaccination coverage is traditionally far from the objectives of the Ministry of Health. Proof is this press release issued by the government with a meaningful headline: “Flu vaccine 2021-2022 – Just because we don’t talk about it any more that the flu has disappeared”.

For now, no alert regarding the flu epidemic

Usually, the flu epidemic is very active in December. For now, there is no alert according to the data collected. the epidemic bulletin on week 45, that of November 8 to 14, shows no increase. The incidence rate for influenza-like illness is 39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (according to the Sentinel network). At the same time, barely 1% of SOS Médecins medical procedures are linked to the flu.

Containment last winter reduced the immunity of the population

Last winter, in the middle of the second wave of Covid-19, there was no seasonal flu epidemic. Successive confinements and “barrier” measures to fight the epidemic had then reduced the circulation of other viruses, starting with that of influenza. Downside, the weak circulation of viruses last winter probably reduced the immunity of the population.

In the course of this campaign, the Ministry of Health is campaigning to receive “at the same time its third dose of anti-Covid vaccine and its flu vaccine, specifying that the Haute Autorité de santé ensures “that there is no danger in being vaccinated simultaneously against the two diseases. The only precaution to be taken, it is necessary to receive each injection in a different arm”.
