With Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan winning a third presidential term, questions have been raised about the challenges he will face in the next five years. What are the most prominent of them after he managed yesterday to defeat opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the second round of the presidential elections? Can he overcome these challenges?

It is expected that the Turkish president, who also leads the ruling “Justice and Development” party, will face three major and different challenges inside and outside the country during his new presidential term, which he won months before the centenary of the founding of the republic, and about 4 months after a devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey, leaving thousands dead and injured. And huge damage to the infrastructure.

According to Aydin Sezer, a former Turkish diplomat and political analyst, the challenges that the Turkish president will face in the coming period are limited to the current economic crisis in the country, the refugee file, and the rearrangement of relations with abroad.

Sezer told Al Arabiya.net, “The economic crisis is on the scale of the challenges that Erdogan will face in the coming period, and he will have to take concrete steps to find solutions to economic problems, including what he will do to achieve the flow of foreign investment into the country to overcome this crisis.”

He added, “The second challenge that Erdogan will face in the coming period is the refugee file, after the society’s attitude towards it was divided, and for this reason it will be very difficult for the Turkish president to achieve a kind of unity and solidarity, which means that the problem of refugees and asylum seekers will be the biggest internal challenge in which he will face difficulties.” about dealing with it.

He continued, “The issue of foreign policy is the third challenge that Erdogan will face during his new session during his attempt to make peace with all countries whose relations with Ankara have been strained in previous years, and this requires following a sober foreign policy in order to achieve internal economic reforms as well.”

According to the Turkish diplomat, people’s confidence in Erdogan’s ability to overcome these challenges appears to be low, and this was reflected in the results of the second round of the elections, as the difference in votes between him and his opponent was only more than two million votes.

It is also likely that the Turkish president will face challenges regarding the issue of reconstruction in the 11 Turkish provinces affected by the earthquake that struck the south of the country in early February and spread to Syria, leaving thousands dead and injured and massive damage to the infrastructure in both neighboring countries.

Last Sunday evening, the Supreme Elections Commission had officially announced Erdogan’s victory in the second round of the presidential elections, in which he was able to defeat his rival, Kilicdaroglu.

The head of the commission, Ahmed Yanar, confirmed in a press conference last Sunday evening that Erdogan won the presidency in the run-off and obtained 52.14 percent of the vote, which represents the official and final result of the elections.
