Paola Egonu painted pink, anti-racist mural in Rome defaced (photo) –

The mural “Italianità” dedicated to Paola Egonu lasted 24 hours. The work of the street artist Laika appeared on Monday morning and was defaced during the night. The intent of those who vandalized the work is clear. In fact, the body of the Olympic champion player with the women’s Italian volleyball team was painted with pink paint.

The mural painted in front of the CONI headquarters in Rome, on Via Gregorio Allegri, portrays Egonu dunking and a message: “Stop racism, hatred, xenophobia, ignorance”. “This victory is a slap in the face to all the so-called ‘patriots’ who do not accept a multi-ethnic Italy, made up of second generations, that does not want the ius soli. A ball in the face to those who talk about ‘Italianness’ referring to physical features”, the artist declared when presenting the work. “Racism is an ugly cancer from which Italy must heal”, Laika commented this morning after seeing the defaced mural.
