Steve Simon, president of the World Women’s Professional Tennis Association (WTA), said today that due to safety concerns about Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, all competitions in China will be suspended. As soon as the news came out, it shocked the global sports world, and tennis players expressed their support for WTA’s approach, and ball king Djokovic (Novak Djokovic) also praised WTA for being brave.
WTA Chairman Simon said in a statement today that Peng Shuai is not allowed to express freely and appears to be forced to deny allegations of sexual assault. Simon is worried that if the tournament continues to be held in China next year, the players and staff may be at risk, so he decided to suspend all WTA events in China, including Hong Kong. He emphasized that even if this decision will cause heavy losses to the WTA, “Chinese leaders leave the WTA no choice.”
Djokovic, who is currently participating in the Davis Cup on behalf of Serbia, was interviewed earlier and said that the Professional Players Association (PTPA) he established is always with the players. He fully supports the WTA because there is no question about whether Peng Shuai is safe. Enough news. Djokovic praised: “WTA has done a very brave thing. As a member of the tennis world, we must be united.”
The famous tennis players and Grand Slam champions of all generations all supported the WTA in unison. The American legend Billie Jean King said: “The WTA chooses to stand on the right side of history and defend the rights of our players. This is why the women’s tennis is a woman. Another reason for the sports leader.”
After the Peng Shuai incident broke out, 18 Grand Slam champion legend Chris Evert expressed his pride in Simon and WTA and hoped that other sports and even the corporate world would follow suit. Finally, she said, “Now, let’s focus. The spirit is looking for Peng Shuai.”
Another female tennis legend Martina Navratilova praised Simon and WTA for their bravery, surpassing money, and standing up for Peng Shuai and women from all over the world. She also did not forget to tag the International Olympic Committee: “What do you say at the IOC?!? I can’t hear your voice so far hey!!!”
Former champion and U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick paid tribute to the WTA and was proud of being in the tennis world. British male tennis player Liam Broady called on ATP and ITF to follow up and boycott China. Active female tennis players such as Wimbledon champions Petra Kvitova, Alize Cornet, Barbora Strycova, Shelby Rogers, and male tennis player Kevin Anderson Sandgren (Tennys Sandgren) and others are also supporting WTA on Twitter.
In addition, the US Tennis Association affirmed Simon and WTA, “This leadership spirit is quite courageous, and it is exactly what we need to ensure that all individuals are protected and all voices are heard. “The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said it can “understand” WTA’s decision.
