According to the Governor of Jonglei state, Denay Jock Chagor, the ten people who died consisted of eight passengers and two pilots.
The South Supreme Airlines flight with flight number HK-4274 to the capital of Juba crashed after taking off from Pieri in Jonglei.
“Representing myself as well as the community, I would like to express my deep condolences to the families and relatives who were affected by this accident,” he said, Wednesday (3/2/2021).
He added that the plane crashed around 17.00 local time.
Earlier on the same day, the Director of Juba International Airport, Kur Kuol, also confirmed the news of the plane crash.
“There is news that an airplane crashed in the city of Pieri,” he said.
Kuol confirmed the plane crashed shortly after take-off at around 5:00 p.m. (1500GMT).
“The plane crash occurred in an area with minimal internet network, so we have difficulty confirming the number of victims,” he said.
This is the second incident involving a South Supreme Airlines plane in recent years.
In 2017, a South Supreme Airlines plane caught fire in the air and had to make an emergency landing. There were no deaths or injuries in the incident.
Until now, South Supreme Airlines has not commented on the incident at Pieri. The South Sudanese authorities have not announced the cause of the crash.
