[Helsinki 9th Archyde.com]–The Finnish government announced on the 9th that it is planning to revise the border law so that obstacles such as fences can be installed on the border with Russia. A move to strengthen preparedness for the threat of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Finland is currently applying for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The forested border between the two countries has a history of war with Russia, although most of the total length of 1,300 km is indicated by signs.

Russia could put pressure on the border, like Belarus, which the European Union (EU) blamed when refugees from the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa got stuck at the Polish border at the end of last year. Concerned, Finland is rushing to strengthen border security.

The government’s bill to amend the law includes a plan to limit the acceptance of refugee applications to specific points of entry. Existing EU regulations recognize the right to seek asylum at any point of entry into a member state.

The amendment also includes the installation of fences and the construction of new roads to facilitate border security on the Finnish side.
