Plans to reduce energy imports from Russia force us to look towards the Mediterranean

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said today that his country’s plans to “reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels are forcing Europe to look towards the Mediterranean to meet its energy needs,” the Italian Nova news agency reported.

In a speech to the European Parliament, Draghi said: “The reduction in imports of fossil fuels from Russia has led Europe to turn to the Mediterranean to meet its energy needs, and over the past few weeks we have moved with full speed and determination to diversify our gas supplies.”

He continued, “We have taken important simplification measures to accelerate the production of renewable energy, which are necessary to make our growth more sustainable, and there are huge opportunities offered by renewables in Africa and the Middle East.”

He added, “The countries of Southern Europe, and Italy in particular, are strategically positioned to collect this energy production and act as a bridge to the Nordic countries. The centrality of our tomorrow is through the investments that we will be able to make today.”

He stressed, “We must pay more attention to the need to pay attention to the Mediterranean, given its strategic position as a bridge to Africa and the Middle East. Many young countries overlook the Mediterranean and are ready to instill enthusiasm in their relationship with Europe, with them, the European Union must build a partnership Not only economic, but political and social as well.”
