PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series X

Bad news for those who had planned to buy them, AMD has just announced through its CEO Lisa Su that the shortage of video game consoles, desktop processors, and graphics cards will not end until the start of the second half of 2021. In this context, the devices most affected are the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X / S. Also, the fact that bots continue to take possession of a large number of consoles as soon as they go on sale will only worsen the problem. problem.

This news about the shortage was included in AMD’s year-end report. In the report, the company shows that it managed to break past earnings records thanks to a very successful last quarter. One of the reasons behind this success has been the launch of a whole slew of new products using AMD components. For example, there were Ryzen processors and RX 6000 series graphics cards, and of course the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S.

Sony will improve the ventilation system of the PS5 through Update / Sony Credits

Regarding the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, we know that the out-of-stock problems had already started when the new consoles were released.

Some devices more affected than others

From the beginning, stocks were already quite thin, and according to Su, this situation will continue until the increase in production capacity. Su also indicated that not all products are affected in the same way. Indeed, the cheapest components intended for entry-level PCs and consoles will be the most affected since the demand for these parts is very high. During the same period, AMD is more optimistic about the stock of more expensive components.

Apparently AMD is not the only company in the field to face the same situation. According to information Nvidia would also have problems with regard to stocks of its RTX 30-series graphics cards which will not be bailed out before April.

A long-standing problem

When a new PS5 and Xbox Series X / S level game console comes out, it is always expected that there will be supply issues. On the Microsoft side, the company was already expecting a stock shortage that would last until March. We are therefore waiting to see if the solutions proposed by AMD based on an increase in production will be able to resolve the situation.

So far, it is unclear when the Sony and Microsoft consoles will be available on a larger scale, that is to say outside of remote orders and purchases.
