Three EU heads of government announce a trip to Kyiv

After more than two weeks of war, Kyiv is almost completely surrounded by Russian troops. Nevertheless, the prime ministers of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia want to travel to the Ukrainian capital to set an example.

Amid the intensifying fighting in Kyiv, the heads of government of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia plan to travel to the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday. Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will travel to Kyiv with his colleagues Petr Fiala and Janez Jansa to assure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj and Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal of EU support, the government in Warsaw announced.

“The aim of the visit is to reiterate the unequivocal support of the entire European Union for the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine and to present a broad package of assistance to the Ukrainian state and society,” Warsaw said in a statement. Accordingly, the three politicians travel to Kyiv as “representatives of the European Council”. The trip was organized with EU Council President Charles Michel and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

After more than two weeks of war, Kyiv is almost completely surrounded by Russian troops. A series of powerful explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital early Tuesday morning. According to the Ukrainian rescue workers, at least three residential buildings in the districts of Svyatoshyn, Podil and Osorky were hit, killing at least two people. AFP reporters reported a huge cloud of smoke over Kyiv and severe damage to a ten-story apartment building in the Podil district.

According to Zelenskyj, negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow are to continue on Tuesday. Both sides had recently spoken of progress in the talks.
