Vienna (OTS) – On the occasion of the “Vienna Academic Ball” taking place today, a rally was reported that was directed against it. Around 2,400 participants gathered in Sigmund Freud Park in the late afternoon and then marched to Morzinplatz, where the final rally took place. Occasionally pyrotechnic objects were detonated.
Around the same time, around 8,000 people gathered in front of Parliament to demonstrate against the war in Ukraine. The rally ended at Karlsplatz.
Both rallies were largely peaceful. There were no significant incidents.
About 1,200 officers were deployed. The Vienna police were supported by several operational units from the provinces of Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Salzburg and Styria.
The goals of protecting freedom of assembly and at the same time ensuring safe access for ball guests were achieved in full.
