“The Covid crisis should serve us to thoroughly rethink our modes of consumption and social life, not to sink us into a world of predatory overconsumption. ” In a forum published on Monday, November 16, 120 signatories – political leaders, unions, but also booksellers or publishers – are calling for « stopper Amazon ».
“The rebellion that is mounting everywhere in France must still grow, because the world dreamed of by Amazon is in total contradiction with the deep aspiration to decent lives on a livable planet”, write the signatories of this text published on the Franceinfo website. They intend to mobilize by November 27, the date of Black Friday, for “Show the urgency of stopping the expansion of the e-commerce giant before it is too late”.
They require, as a first step, the establishment of a “Exceptional tax” on the turnover of Amazon and “Other profiteers from the crisis”, which would allow “Finance measures to preserve employment and the solidarity fund for local businesses”.
They also consider that the vote on the measures advocated by the citizens’ convention for the climate is the “Last opportunity to stop this expansion before the damage is irreversible”. The 150 citizens of the convention had proposed a moratorium on the construction of new commercial spaces, but the head of state, Emmanuel Macron, and his government “Do everything to ensure that e-commerce warehouses are excluded”, deplore the signatories.
“The big winner of the crisis”
The platform is carried by Attac, of which the spokespersons Aurélie Found, Raphaël Pradeau and Maxime Combes are signatories. Also signatories: publishers, economists, trade unionists – including the secretary general of the CGT, Philippe Martinez, and that of the FSU, Benoît Teste -, heads of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the director general of Greenpeace France, Jean-François Julliard, and the president of Friends of the Earth, Khaled Gaïji, or the spokesperson for the Confédération paysanne, Nicolas Girod.
But also deputies and leaders of political parties – including the leader of La France insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), Fabien Roussel, the boss of Europe Ecology-Les Verts ( EELV), Julien Bayou, as well as municipal councilors and mayors, in particular those (EELV), of Grenoble and Besançon, Eric Piolle and Anne Vignot.
For them, Amazon appears as the “Big winner of the crisis” of Covid-19 and containment. While the “First of chores risk their daily lives”, what “Tens of thousands of people have lost or will lose their jobs” and that’“A million additional people fell below the poverty line in France”, the e-commerce giant saw its sales “Explode” in 2020, and the fortune of its CEO, Jeff Bezos, “Exceed 200 billion dollars”.
This accelerated development is happening, according to them, at the expense of our country’s climate commitments, but also of “Wage demands” who “Are swept away with the back of the hand” by the American firm and local businesses, where thousands of jobs are threatened.
They accuse Emmanuel Macron of “Roll out the red carpet” to the company, in “interdīcere[sant] everyone to sell non-essential products except … the giants of online sales! “ :
“By making this choice, the president is designing a world after worse than before. That of a security capitalism dominated by GAFA, these giants of e-commerce and digital life. That of a multinational in the process of establishing its monopoly in the sale of billions of products by destroying local social life, a multinational that destroys 4.5 jobs when it creates one, which gradually replaces its employees with robots and which uses thousands of precarious workers to deliver its products. “
