What advice would you give to young professionals eager to contribute to the renewable energy sector?

Interview: Dr. Ada Sterling on The Future of Renewable Energy

In the quest for a lasting future, we sat down with Dr. Ada Sterling, a leading voice in renewable energy and Director of Research at Sterling Green Innovations, to discuss the latest advancements, hurdles, and the future of clean energy.

Advanced Solar Technology: Mats Across The Miles

Archyde (A): Dr. Sterling, your team has been working on ambitious solar projects like the DESERTech concept. Can you tell us about the potential of mass-scale solar energy?

Dr. Ada Sterling (AS): Absolutely, A. Mass-scale solar is a game-changer. Projects like DESERTech aim to create solar ‘mats’ spanning miles, generating immense energy with minimal land use. It’s not science fiction; it’s our future.

Unstoppable Wind? Hydrogen’s Growing Role

A: Wind power is another renewable energy powerhouse. Though, intermittency and grid compatibility remain challenges. What role do you see for wind in a sustainable energy mix,and how might hydrogen help?

AS: Wind power is indeed crucial, and we’re improving grid integration daily. Hydrogen can stabilise grids and enable storage, turning wind into a reliable, always-available energy source. It’s an exciting field of research.

Storing Energy: the Million-dollar Question

A: Energy storage is another hurdle. what advancements are we seeing here?

AS: We’re making notable strides in battery technology, driven by electric vehicles and personal electronics. Solid-state batteries show promise for enhanced safety and longevity. Plus, pumped hydro and compressed air storage are heavylifters in bulk energy storage.

Thoughts on Nuclear’s Role in the Mix

A: There’s renewed interest in nuclear power due to its low greenhouse gas emissions. Do you see it playing a significant role in a sustainable energy future?

AS: Indeed, I think nuclear can be part of the mix, especially with advancements like Molten Salt Reactors and Small Modular Reactors. But it needs stringent safety precautions and responsible waste management. Expansion should be considered on a case-by-case basis.

A: Dr. Sterling, thank you for your thoughtful insights. As we wind down, what advice would you give to young professionals eager to contribute to the renewable energy sector?

AS: I’d say, stay curious, learn continuously, and never stop questioning. the industry is dynamic and full of opportunities. And remember, your work matters – together, we’re powering a sustainable future.
