For two years, the climber of the Cofidis team has been the best Frenchman on the Tour in the general classification. 11th in 2020 then 8th the following year, he will still want to shine in 2022. As he has become accustomed to, he will descend from his Normandy to attend, in the first row, the disclosure of the route of the next Big Loop.
Why will you be present at the Palais des Congrès in Paris this Thursday for the revelation of the Tour de France 2022 route?
GUILLAUME MARTIN. Already because it is an important moment in a season. We are still talking about the biggest race in the world. It’s a bit like being in the middle of the action.
Are you going to discover the whole route or have you inquired beforehand?
(To smile) I did not take the step of going snooping everywhere but indirectly, we have information. Obviously, I already know a few small tracks on the course but there will still be surprises. For example in 2018, I didn’t expect there to be so many kilometers of cobblestones. The cobblestones are just one of the rumors that are also circulating for 2022. There should be some.
Does this presentation mark the real start of the next Tour?
Yes that’s it. The Tour 2022 will begin this Thursday because we will lay the foundation stone with the organization of courses and reconnaissance according to what we will learn from the course. I’m pretty active on this and I like that we get things started early on. What is good is that the following week, there is an administrative internship with the team so we will be able to discuss all that. This is also why I come to the presentation: it will allow me to speak face-to-face with the manager of our team and also with other people concerned.
Will the 2022 Tour still be your main objective?
Sure. In any case, I’m not putting more pressure on my shoulders. Besides, if I took a little more each time someone asks me if I feel pressure when talking about the Tour, I’ll be a pressure cooker!
