Joe Biden, president of the United States, touting his political opponents on Friday evening during a brief address to the nation that capped a week marked by the passage of a bill stemming from a bipartisan agreement that allows the United States to avoid in extremis a payment default. Against a backdrop of political polarization and toxic rhetoric, Biden’s remarks were nothing short of extraordinary.

PS: Privately, White House negotiators are congratulating themselves that they got the best of McCarthy and his team, even though they let them claim major cuts in public, according to a report of New York Times, from which I quote: “In the opinion of administration officials, the spending reductions provided for in the comprehensive final agreement are no worse than they might have expected from the regular budget bills passed by a divided Congress. They agreed to structure the cuts so they would appear to save $1.5 trillion over a decade in the eyes of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. But thanks to side deals — including accounting tricks — White House officials estimate the actual cuts could amount to just $136 billion over the two-year spending caps that are at the heart of the OK. »
