Preview IAA Mobility 2021
The big Stromern
At the IAA 2021 in Munich, the car manufacturers want to present themselves as a future-oriented industry. That is why the focus is almost exclusively on electric vehicles.
The IAA is just around the corner and for the first time it will take place in Munich. The edition of the year 2021 is provided with the addition “Mobility”. Those responsible are doing everything in their power to dispel the self-presumed musty smell under the gowns of the automotive industry. “It is important that we as the automotive industry can show that we are ready for the mobility of tomorrow,” explains VDA Managing Director Jürgen Mindel and then adds: “We will still see cars with internal combustion engines in Munich, but the clear focus is on the future of the drive. On battery-electric mobility, plug-in hybrids and similar formats “.
The automotive industry willingly follows this guideline. Driven by suspected protests that activists have already announced, electric vehicles are at the center of the automobile shop window. The manufacturers want to get closer to the audience with a new format that includes so-called “Open Spaces”. Presumably you won’t see the vehicles anymore because of all the charging stations. It was to be expected that VW would hold up the Stromer flag with the electric SUV Coupé ID.5. BMW doesn’t let the butter off the boat at its home game and rolls the BMW i4 and BMW iX onto the stage. Mercedes is continuing its electrification offensive and is showing the long-awaited E version of the E-Class with the EQE. This sedan will not offer many surprises anymore, as it will adopt a lot of the technology of the EQS.
If you want to explore the future planning of the VW Group including the mother, it is worth taking a look at the daughters. The Seat subsidiary Cupra proudly shows the Urbanrebel and with this study gives an outlook on a city e-flea that should appear in 2025. That fits exactly into the picture, because VW technical director Thomas Ulbrich has announced a “Small BEV” for this point in time, which could come as ID.2, which is built in Spain and uses the MEB-Lite platform. Earlier it was Smart’s turn to present a near-series study of the small electric SUV with partner Geely, which is expected to appear next year. The tiny Swiss city Microlino is even more compact.
The fact that Hyundai, including the subsidiary brand Kia, is on the way to Munich underlines the fact that the Koreans are now switching back to attack mode and want to emphatically show the world that there is still an automotive world besides the VW ID family. In addition to the sleek Kia EV6, which is technically related to the Hyundai Ionic 5, Genesis could score with the electric SUV GV60, which is also based on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) platform. What is certain is that Kia has the plug-in hybrid version of the Sportage crossover in its luggage. For Renault boss Luca de Meo, the IAA 2021 in Munich is something of an affair of the heart. Because the Italian was once a board member at Audi and wants to show his former colleagues what his new company can do. It has already been leaked that the Megane E-Tech will be an electrified model. It will be exciting to see what Dacia has in its luggage. The Renault subsidiary wants to introduce a new family car from the brand, which will probably have seven seats and will be an SUV.
And Audi? With the Grandsphere Concept, the Ingolstadt-based company is already giving a pretty near-series outlook on the successor to the Audi A8, which will be presented at the end of 2024. The “spaceship” breaks with some of the traditions of the classic luxury sedan and has a good chance of becoming one of the eye-catchers at the IAA. Mainly because the study is flanked by the Sky Sphere, another handsome concept car. Other car manufacturers are also using concepts to bring their vision of the mobility of the future closer to visitors. According to reports, BMW will show a study that demonstrates the holistic sustainability of the automobile. Porsche will also look to the future with its concept vehicle. The Zuffenhausen-based company is still cautious. It is quite possible that the prototype is related to motorsport. After all, Porsche wants to score points in the LMDh series (Le Mans Daytona hybrid) in the future.
Of course, vehicles with combustion engines are not completely overshadowed by electric vehicles. The new VW “Bulli” T7 will put a smile on the face of camping fans, especially since it will also be available in a PHEV version. The VW Multivan not only offers more space than before in the new long version, which is made use of by a flexible chair system. The increasing networking of minibuses with cars is demonstrated by over 20 assistance systems that support the driver. Mercedes dares to venture off-road with the C-Class All Terrain. Customers in the Audi RS 3 and the BMW 2 Series Coupé will be on the move quickly. Porsche should not be absent from such a horsepower parade and pulls the cloth off the 911 Carrera GTS.
