“Protect Yourself from Dangerous Mosquitoes in Occitania: Tips and Tools for Eradication”

The resurgence of the tiger mosquito in Occitania is a growing concern for health authorities. The period of activity of this potential vector of dangerous viruses such as dengue, chikungunya and zika extends from May 1 to November 30.

After the recent rains, an increase in the number of mosquitoes is expected, highlighting the importance of vigilance and collective action to protect ourselves. The tiger mosquito is now present and active throughout the Occitanie region, with a constant progression in territories previously spared. The establishment of this mosquito represents a public health priority because of its ability to transmit dangerous viruses.

The participation of all: the key role for eradication

The regional population is called upon to take an active part in the prevention effort. Indeed, nearly 90% of the population of Occitania, i.e. approximately 5.5 million inhabitants, are exposed to the presence of the tiger mosquito. The Occitanie Regional Health Agency has called for collective vigilance to help control this harmful species.

44% of the municipalities of Occitanie are colonized, which represents 90% of the regional population, i.e. nearly 5.5 million exposed inhabitants

Elimination of standing water areas

Eliminating areas of stagnant water is one of the most effective measures to curb the proliferation of the tiger mosquito. This means eliminating small waste, bulky waste, green waste and any other place where water can stagnate. Used tires can for example be filled with soil if you do not want to throw them away.

Maintenance of green areas

For the maintenance of our green spaces, it is recommended to change the water for plants and flowers once a week. Also, if possible, flower pot saucers should be removed or filled with sand. Checking the proper flow of rainwater and waste water is also crucial, as is the regular cleaning of gutters, manholes, gutters and drainages.

Covering water tanks and eliminating mosquito resting places

Beyond the maintenance of the gardens, the ARS recommends covering the water tanks with a veil of mosquito net or a simple fabric, and eliminating the resting places of adult mosquitoes. This includes clearing and trimming tall grass and hedges, pruning trees, picking up fallen fruit and plant debris, and reducing sources of moisture.

Social mobilization and the role of local authorities

Faced with the importance of this threat to public health, local authorities have a key role to play. ARS Occitanie has set up an entertainment program by forming associations in each department. These associations have the mission of proposing social mobilizations in the neighborhoods and supporting the inhabitants in the identification and management of mosquito breeding sites.

Communities are called upon to ensure rigorous management of the public places they manage to eliminate potential breeding grounds for the tiger mosquito. This system is made available to prevention actors in communities, schools and other public institutions.
