Pyrenees: a prefect appointed to promote dialogue between pro and anti-bear

An official to ease tensions? A delegated prefect in charge of subjects related to the thorny issue of the bear in the Pyrenees has just been appointed, the Occitanie prefecture announced on Tuesday, while a bear was killed on Saturday in Ariège by a hunter who ‘she had injured in the town of Seix (Ariège).

According to the prefecture, Jean-Yves Chiaro, was appointed delegated prefect “in charge of ours in the Pyrenees ”on November 19, on the eve of the incident. Jean-Yves Chiaro will have the particular mission “to strengthen the dialogue between all the actors” and “will immediately go to meet the actors in the field”, adds the prefecture in its press release. As such, he will participate on December 8 in a meeting of the Pastoralism and Bear group.

Representatives of the agricultural professions, environmental protection associations, hunting or hiking federations, as well as elected officials or parliamentarians, may be present at a meeting of this type.

Sunday, Jean-Luc Fernandez, president of the Ariège Hunting Federation, judged “impossible” the cohabitation between the bear and the human being. On the other hand, for the pro-bear association Pays de l’ours-Adet, this “event in no way calls into question the presence of the bear”. On the other hand, pro-bears have just launched a petition to demand “the end of the beatings in the middle of the bear zone” which had reached almost 35,000 signatures on Tuesday.
