UNITED KINGDOM – Modernization is underway at Buckingham Palace. From the next official visit of the Queen Consort, the role of ladies-in-waiting, better known as ” Ladies-in-waiting across the Channel, will gradually evolve on the decision of the reine consort Camilla this Sunday, November 27.

From now on, 75-year-old Queen Camilla will therefore be accompanied by six “ queen’s companions » (« Queen’s companions », in the language of Shakespeare), not to mention his private secretary (and his assistant private secretary). All were designated this Sunday and are close friends of the queen. Their main mission being to occupy a similar position, while being more ” casual and informal », according to the BBC.

For these honorary positions of the British crown, it is therefore the end of a (very) longue tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Six in number, these assistants to the queen will not completely disappear.

For the ” queen’s companions “, the missions previously entrusted to the ladies of companies will not be part of their role, in particular with regard to the tasks of correspondence and administration, but will continue to accompany Camilla during the official engagements of the queen.

In addition, the six ” queen’s companions will not receive a salary for this position, but will have their expenses covered by the crown. The change will officially come on the sidelines of an event scheduled for Tuesday at Buckingham Palace, for a reception for activists against domestic violence and violence against women.
