Santa Coloma de Farners welcomes the new exhibition by Quim Domenand on “the bad practice of Europe.” The Casa de la Paraula will host from Saturday until January 30 Surfing Europe, a series of paintings that reflect on important events that happen on the continent “as a result of bad policies, social inequality and selfishness,” says the organization.

The paintings, which are on display for the first time in Santa Coloma, contrast the artistic legacy inherited from the classics with the grayer facts of recent European historya, which have resulted in the rise of the far right or carelessness towards refugees.

In the solitude of his workshop in La Canya, in La Garrotxa, a space that Domene calls the Fàbrica del Riu, he conceived this collection of 50 paintings, rethinking his work at a much slower pace than usual. He painted them during the period of strict confinement and in later weeks, when there were still restrictions that especially affected social life and mobility.

The whole series has been made with different materials, some already common in the work of the artist and others the result of thoughtful research during the beginnings of the pandemic. Part of the 50 paintings are made on handmade papers and also on gray cardboard, austere materials that give an air of sobriety to the paintings. There are also many with bright colors, just to convey a graphic tone and a message of proclamation, denunciation and provocation.
