What number ! Starting out on his own at 87 kilometers from the finish in one of the most beautiful stages of the Vuelta, Rafal Majka won the fifteenth stage of the Vuelta at the end of a sensational breakaway. In the general classification, no significant change has taken place.
The long stage of 197.5 km between Navalmoral de la Mata and El Barraco kept its promises at the start of the race. The escapes follow one another without a group being able to break away definitively. In the first day ascent, Fabio Aru (Continue NextHash) et Rafal Majka (UAE Emirates) manage to take the lead, while a large group of cons follows behind with notably Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma), Wout Poels (Bahrain-Victorious) et Carlos Verona (Movistar Team).
Behind, it is logically the formation Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux of the red jersey Odd Christian Eiking who quietly controls. In the group in pursuit of the duo, the understanding is not optimal, which prevents it from coming back to the height of the two fugitives.
At 87 kilometers from the finish, Aru can no longer keep up with Majka’s pace and has to let him go since the Pole does not want to let him come back from behind. On the other hand, the disorganization continues. Some are getting ahead, others are coming back, the situation is ideal for the former third in the Vuelta, who still left in a solitary raid.
57 kilometers from the goal, Kruijswijk detonates the group in pursuit of Majka and sets off alone in a duel between men which he begins two minutes late. He manages to regain about thirty seconds before stumbling. Barring an accident, Majka seems to be heading for a sensational victory. At the foot of the last climb, the Emirates team rider is still 1’30 “ahead of Kruiswijk. Nothing seems to be able to stop him.
In the group of favorites, some riders try to get out to scavenge a little time, but only Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) managed to take fifteen seconds over the other big names in the peloton.
Imperial, Majka won this fifteenth stage of the Vuelta at the end of an insane number 87 kilometers long alone. After a first stage won in 2017, the Pole signs here a second success on the Spanish roads. Eiking remains red jersey.
