The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Saturday granted emergency clearance for Rgereneron.
IThis is a synthetic antibody treatment against the coronavirus which had in particular been received by US President Donald Trump when he was infected with Covid-19.
This cocktail of antibody drugs has been approved for use in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate Covid-19 aged 12 years and older, including people over 65 years of age.
Regeneron’s drug combines two lab-made antibodies designed to cling to the new coronavirus and prevent it from replicating and hijacking human cells.
“The emergency authorization of these monoclonal antibodies administered together offers healthcare providers another tool in the fight against the pandemic,” said Dr Patrizia Cavazzoni, acting director of the Center for the Assessment and Research of drugs from the FDA, in a statement.
As the United States faces a new explosion in coronavirus cases, this is the second treatment to be given the green light this November, for patients who are not hospitalized but are at high risk of developing a serious illness.
