- The cycling world championships, which would have been scheduled for September 20th to 27th, will not take place.
- The reasons for this are the decision of the Federal Council not to loosen the 1000-viewer limit until October 1, as well as the uncertain situation with regard to entry restrictions.
- If possible, the title fights should take place elsewhere in Europe. The UCI is trying to find an alternative solution.
The organizer of the cycling world championships in Aigle and Martigny had already indicated a week ago: If the ban on events is not relaxed by the Federal Council at the beginning of September, the title fights will have to be canceled.
After the Federal Council’s media conference on Wednesday, the organizers have now decided to definitely call off the World Cup. The event would have taken place from September 20 to 27, but the ban on events will not come into effect until the beginning of October.
The decisive factor in the decision was not only the ban on events, the travel restrictions that apply worldwide also had an influence. Only on Wednesday night, for example, did the Australian Cycling Association announce that it would not send any riders to the World Cup in Switzerland, except for the professionals who were already in Europe.
Next major event falls victim to Corona
The cancellation of the World Cup joins the list of canceled and postponed events. With the Ice Hockey World Championships in Zurich and Lausanne, a major sporting event that would have taken place in Switzerland in 2020 had to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“It hurts, but under the current conditions it is the only correct decision – and the only one that is justifiable in public. So it’s not unexpected, ”said Markus Pfisterer, CEO of Swiss Cycling.
Next World Cup in Switzerland in 2024 in Zurich
This means that Swiss cycling fans have to wait four years before they can cheer on the best professional cyclists in the world at a World Cup in Switzerland. Because for 2024 the road world championship is scheduled again in Switzerland (in Zurich). Accordingly, the support and accompanying measures introduced in 2019 would be maintained, according to Swiss Cycling.
The Swiss championships, which were part of the program as the final rehearsal on August 22nd in Aigle / Martigny, cannot take place either.
However, it is still possible that the World Championships will be held at a different location in Europe. “We will try with all our might to hold the World Cycling Championships,” said David Lappartient, President of the UCI World Cycling Association. A decision should be made by September 1st at the latest.
