There has been an explosion at a mosque in the northern Afghan city of Fayzabad. According to Afghan media reports, the explosion occurred during a prayer for the dead of the Taliban’s deputy governor of Badakhshan province, Maulawi Nezar Ahmad, who died in an attack just this week. The Afghan news channel Tolo News spoke of 15 dead and 50 injured, citing information from a local hospital.

According to media reports, the former Taliban police chief in Baghlan province, Safiullah Samim, is among the dead. According to dpa information, high-ranking Taliban might also be among the fatalities. The militant Islamists, who have ruled Afghanistan since international troops withdrew, initially made no public statements.
