Retired Commodore Jorge Alberto Espina was sentenced to 14 years in prison

The retired Commodore Jorge Alberto Espina was sentenced to 14 years in prison for crimes against humanity to the detriment of ten victims, according to the verdict communicated today by the Federal Oral Criminal Court 2 of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, which investigated the crimes committed during the last civic dictatorship military in the clandestine detention and torture center known as Viceroy Cevallos.

When formulating his last words before the court in the case called Virrey Cevallos II, Espina alleged that “I did not know anything” of what happened in the clandestine center located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Monserrat and that operated under the orbit of the Air Force.

The defendant assured that “he did not commit the crimes he was charged with; he did not receive orders, nor did he participate” in the torture sessions that were carried out in that place and added that he expected “a declaration of innocence” by the magistrates.

The court, made up of Rodrigo Giménez Uriburu, Jorge Gorini and Javier Ríos, with the intervention of the attorney general Pablo Ouviña, decided that the crimes investigated should be considered as crimes against humanity and sentenced Espina to the penalty of “14 years in prison, absolute and perpetual disqualification” for considering him co-perpetrator criminally responsible for the crimes of “illegitimate deprivation of liberty, aggravated for having been committed by a public official with abuse of his functions or without the formalities prescribed by law and for mediating violence and threats, “as well as for” its duration of more than one month in ideal competition with the imposition of torture in relation to with the conditions of captivity imposed repeatedly on three occasions to the detriment of Carlos Daniel Gurbanov, Miriam Liliana Lewin and Osvaldo Antolín“.

According to the court, these crimes concur, among others, with those repeated on nine occasions to the detriment of Juan Crisoto Alcaráz, José Oscar Osuna, Osvaldo Antonio López, Vilma Gladys Aoad, Osvaldo Gabriel Lanzilloti, Jorge Augusto Lorenzo and Alejandro Andrés Lorenzo.

The trial investigated the crimes against humanity committed in 1977 in the clandestine center of Virrey Cevallos, located at 628, 630, 636 Virrey Cevallos Street in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, and which operated under the orbit of Headquarters II. Intelligence of the Air Force.

Espina, who at the time of the events was deputy commodore of the Air Force, was accused as the perpetrator of the crimes of illegal deprivation of liberty – aggravated for mediating violence or threats – repeated on ten occasions that actually concur with each other, of which three cases are aggravated by lasting more than a month, in ideal competition with the crime of imposing torture on eight occasions that actually concur with each other.
