A serious road accident in Antwerp on the night of Saturday to Sunday left one driver dead and 18 passengers injured, according to police spokesman Wouter Bruyns.

The road accident took place around 4:30 a.m. at a crossroads in the Flemish metropolis. A minibus carrying British nationals was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a bend. The minibus hit a pole before rolling onto its side.

The driver did not survive the accident. The other 18 passengers were taken to hospital. A child was seriously injured, the rest of the people on board have minor injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident. It is not yet established why the vehicle was traveling at excessive speed.
