Dakar, Feb 6 (APS) – The President of the Republic thanked his colleagues from the African Union on Saturday for “ the unanimous choice ” made on Senegal to ensure the rotating presidency of the Union for the period 2022 – 2023.
“ I thank my colleagues from the African Union for the unanimous choice made on Senegal to ensure the current presidency of the Union for the period 2022 – 2023 ”, tweeted Macky Sall who took part in the 34th AU summit, meeting organized by videoconference because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Senegal will assume the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) in 2022-2023.
The rotating presidency of the AU is held by a head of state or government of a member country of the organization for a period of one year.
Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was chosen by his African counterparts to lead the institution during this year. He succeeds the South African head of state Cyril Ramaphosa.
“I congratulate President Félix Tshisekedi on his election at the head of the Union for the period 2021 – 2022 and thank President CyrilRamaphosa, outgoing president of the African Union,” the Head of State tweeted.
The 34th AU Summit was marked by the re-election of Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat, as head of the Union Commission. He was the only candidate in the running.
