Russia approves third Covid-19 vaccine; its initial results show 90% efficiency

The first 12,000 doses of the CoviVac vaccine are expected to be sent in March, Mishutin said, noting that “Russia is the only country in the world with three vaccines.”

In mid-August, Russia registered the “Sputnik V” vaccine. The scientists initially expressed doubts about this, as it was registered before the release of the data from the third phase of the trials. A study later published in the medical journal The Lancet found it to be 91% effective and is now approved for use in about 30 countries.

The second Covid-19 vaccine, EpiVacCorona, was registered in Russia in October. About 80,000 doses have been produced so far and local media say it will be used for vaccination in March.

It is estimated that 20 million doses of CoviVac will be produced by the end of the year.

There are currently no CoviVac trial data, but Russian officials say preliminary results show more than 90% efficiency.
