Russia in favor of a protected area in Kabul

The Kremlin on Monday welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to create a secure zone in the Afghan capital for the continuation of humanitarian operations.

“Obviously, we must discuss this proposal,” said spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, during his daily telephone briefing with the press.

“It is very important to discuss all the modalities of such an area, of this regime, but above all we must understand the position of the Taliban on this idea,” he continued.

France and the United Kingdom will plead Monday at the UN for the creation in Kabul of this “safe zone”, said Emmanuel Macron in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche, a project he deemed “totally feasible”.

A conciliatory attitude towards the Taliban

Begun two weeks ago with the capture of Kabul, operations to evacuate Afghans fleeing the Taliban regime are coming to an end at the airport, as the August 31 deadline for the withdrawal of American soldiers approaches. .

The Russian authorities, who evacuated a few hundred people, adopted a conciliatory attitude towards the Taliban, recognizing their victory while calling them for a “national dialogue” to form a representative government.

Russia is concerned, however, for the security of the former Soviet republics in Central Asia, bordering Afghanistan.

Moscow fears in particular an influx of refugees that could destabilize the region, the arrival among them of jihadist fighters and a resurgence of opium and heroin trafficking.

On Monday, Dmitry Peskov also deemed “premature” the idea of removing the Taliban from the list of organizations classified as terrorist.

“It is necessary to see what will be the first measures of the government which will be formed”, he indicated.
