Russian football expelled from international competition, appeals to the Sports Arbitration Court

The Russian Football Association has decided to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) against the ban from international competitions following its invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Football Association announced on its website on the 4th (Korean time) that it would appeal to CAS against the ban of the Russian national team and club teams from participating in international competitions by FIFA and the European Football Federation (UEFA).

The Russian Football Association said, “FIFA and UEFA have infringed the rights of their member Russia Football Association.”

The Russian Football Association plans to argue in the appeal that if national teams and clubs are not allowed to participate, the tournament itself, in which these teams were supposed to compete, should be postponed.

In addition, before a legal judgment on FIFA and UEFA’s action, Russian teams are considering applying for an injunction to open the way for international competitions.

The Russian Football Association said, “FIFA and UEFA have made a decision without legal basis without hearing the Russian Football Association’s position.”

FIFA and UEFA banned the Russian national team and club teams from participating in FIFA/UEFA tournaments on the 1st.

As a result of this ban, the Russian men’s national team will not be able to participate in the 2022 Qatar World Cup European qualifier play-offs.

The women’s national team also failed to participate in the Women’s European Football Championship (Women’s Euro 2022) to be held in England in June.

Russian club Spartak Moscow were automatically eliminated after being expelled from the UEFA Europa League.
