Ruth Jones: Playing Mrs Bennet in Pride & Prejudice | BBC

Ruth Jones, the celebrated creator and star of Gavin & Stacey, is taking on a new iconic role: Mrs. Bennet in the BBC’s upcoming series, The Other Bennet Sister. The ten-part period drama, based on Janice Hadlow’s novel of the same name, offers a fresh perspective on Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice, focusing on the often-overlooked middle daughter, Mary Bennet.

Jones describes portraying the character as a “huge challenge,” acknowledging Mrs. Bennet’s established portrayal as stressed and fixated on securing advantageous marriages for her five daughters. Though, she aims to present a more nuanced interpretation. “I wanted to meet that challenge and portray her differently from how she’s traditionally been seen,” Jones said, adding that she views Mrs. Bennet as driven by a desire for security for her daughters. The series is set to premiere on BBC One on March 15, 2026, with the first five episodes available on BBC iPlayer at 6am that day, followed by a double bill weekly.

A New Seize on a Familiar Character

Jones reframes Mrs. Bennet not as a simply anxious mother, but as a shrewd businesswoman. “She’s a tough businesswoman,” Jones explained, comparing her to “an estate agent with five properties to sell — four will be snapped up, but one can’t even get a viewing.” This reimagining seeks to highlight the pressures and societal constraints faced by women during the Regency era, and the lengths to which Mrs. Bennet goes to ensure her daughters’ futures. The series will similarly explore the dynamic between Mr. And Mrs. Bennet, with Jones speculating about a passionate early relationship that deteriorated into irritation and distance. “I imagine [Mr and Mrs Bennet] had a very healthy sex life early on,” she said. “But it soon became clear they didn’t have much in common and irritated each other greatly.”

The Other Bennet Sister begins at Longbourn, where the Bennet sisters navigate the expectations of Regency society. Mary Bennet, played by Ella Bruccoleri (known for her roles in Call the Midwife and Bridgerton), embarks on a journey of self-discovery, venturing beyond her family home to explore London and the Lake District in pursuit of independence and self-love. The series promises an epic love story as Mary steps out of the shadows of her sisters.

A Stellar Cast Brings Austen to Life

Alongside Jones and Bruccoleri, the series boasts a strong ensemble cast. Richard E. Grant portrays Mr. Bennet, while Indira Varma and Richard Coyle take on the roles of Mr. And Mrs. Gardiner. Laurie Davidson and Dónal Finn will appear as Mary’s potential suitors, Mr. Ryder and Mr. Hayward, respectively. Filming took place in part in Wales, a location Jones expressed fondness for, calling it “one of the happiest jobs” she’s ever had. She added, “I love coming back to Wales.”

The production has already released a trailer offering glimpses of the series’ opulent settings, including assembly rooms and elegant London interiors. The trailer showcases Mary’s journey as she seeks her own identity and purpose, navigating the complexities of Regency society. BritBox will premiere the series exclusively in the US and Canada on May 6, 2026.

Jones described the experience as a positive one, stating the series was “one of the happiest jobs” she’s ever done. She hopes to offer a fresh perspective on a character often viewed negatively, emphasizing the underlying love and protectiveness that motivates Mrs. Bennet’s actions. As one observer noted, Mrs. Bennet “completely sees herself through her mother’s eyes,” highlighting the intergenerational pressures and expectations that shape her behavior.

The Other Bennet Sister promises to be a compelling reimagining of a classic story, offering a new lens through which to view the Bennet family and the societal constraints of the Regency era. With its strong cast and nuanced portrayal of Mrs. Bennet, the series is poised to captivate audiences and spark conversation about Austen’s enduring legacy.

As the premiere date approaches, anticipation builds for this fresh take on Pride and Prejudice. Viewers can expect a blend of familiar settings and characters with a compelling new narrative focus, offering a deeper understanding of Mary Bennet and the motivations behind her mother’s actions. The series is set to launch a new wave of discussion around Austen’s work and the complexities of female characters in historical fiction.
