New Delhi: The condition of writer Salman Rushdie, who was attacked during a public event in America, is critical. He is on a ventilator and may lose sight in one eye, AFP news agency reported, citing people close to him. The arm nerve is severed. It is reported that the liver was also injured. According to the news agency report, he is currently unable to speak.

He was airlifted to hospital shortly after the stabbing and underwent emergency surgery. The incident happened when he came to speak at the Chautauqua Institute in western New York. After Rushdie was welcomed to the stage, a man rushed and attacked him. The neck was injured. The assailant retreated after Rushdi fell to the ground. Footage circulating on social media shows people rushing to help Rushdie. The suspect was arrested.

Born in Mumbai, Salman Rushdie is currently a British citizen. The novel The Satanic Versus, published in 1988, was very controversial. Iran banned it on charges of blasphemy.
