Salmonellosis epidemic in Europe, but fortunately no case in Belgium

Salmonellosis may have been transmitted by a meat processor in Estonia. No cases have yet been detected in Belgium.

It is possible that 196 people were infected with salmonellosis; 56 reports have not yet established with certainty that the disease is involved. Nineteen people ended up in hospital and, in Britain, one person died.

Contaminations took place in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Israel. Finland was the hardest hit with 42 confirmed cases and 47 suspected cases.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports that the wave of infections is likely to come from ready-to-eat chicken or fresh chicken meat, for example in sandwiches and wraps.

According to the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca), nothing indicates at this stage that the disease is also circulating in Belgium.
