Samsung Electronics raises wages by 9%… Extended paid leave by 3 more days

The labor and management of Samsung Electronics has set the average wage increase rate for its employees at 9% this year.

On the 29th, Samsung Electronics’ labor-management council announced to its employees that they had agreed to a 9% wage increase. This is the sum of the basic increase rate of 5% and the average performance increase rate of 4%. This is 1.5 percentage points higher than last year (7.5%), which was the largest increase in the past 10 years, but it is known that some of the employees are objecting. With this wage increase, the starting salary for new employees with a college degree at Samsung Electronics will rise to 51.5 million won.

Along with the wage increase, there were also plans to improve welfare benefits. Starting this year, 3 days will be added to the paid leave, and the spouse’s maternity leave will be increased from 10 days to 15 days.

In the DS (device solution/semiconductor) sector, parental leave will be increased from one year to two years, and one year of self-development leave will be introduced.

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics’ labor union joint bargaining group opposed the agreement and foretold a lawsuit. The joint negotiation team issued a statement and said, “On the 2nd of next month, the company and the labor-management council will start a legal battle against illegal wage negotiations.”
