The ISOCELL HP2 sensor combines 200 million pixels with a size of 0.6 micrometers (µm) in a 1/1.3 optical format, a widely used sensor size in flagship 108MP smartphone cameras. This allows consumers to enjoy higher resolutions in the latest high-end smartphones, without the larger camera obstructions in their devices.

And with Samsung’s advanced Tetra2pixel technology, the HP2 sensor adds more versatility to the camera, as it is able to simulate different pixel sizes to accommodate different levels of light. When in low-light environments, the sensor transforms into either a 1.2µm 50MP image sensor, or a 2.4µm 12.5MP image sensor, by connecting 4 to 16 adjacent pixels together. In order to obtain fuller 8k video clips, with a resolution of approximately 33 megapixels, the HP2 sensor switches to a 1.2 μm 50 megapixel mode to reduce the need for side cropping, and to capture the largest area within the scene. And if the user wants to shoot 8k at 30 frames per second, this can be achieved by a wide field of view with a larger digital pixel size for sharp, cinematic-quality videos.

By using the HP2 sensor, blurry images captured in brightly lit environments can be reduced, thanks to Samsung’s new Double Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology. Within each pixel, a photodiode has a gate at the bottom to transport electrons from the pixel to the logic layer. The vertical transport gate adds a second transport gate in the pixel, and as a result the full capacity of the digital dots is enhanced by over 33%. By storing more electrons and efficient signal transmission processes, this method can reduce the level of overexposure as well as enhance color reproduction, particularly when shooting in bright environments.

In low-light settings, the HP2 sensor’s autofocus is taken to the next level due to the presence of Super QPD technology that allows the sensor to use 200 million pixels to leverage focus factors, a large amount of which is grouped together by four adjacent pixels, to detect changes. It applies to landscape and portrait modes, especially as it provides faster and more accurate autofocus. Using rich pattern data with a large number of reference points, the new sensor is able to focus automatically and quickly, even in low-light conditions.

To achieve outstanding HDR performance, Samsung introduces DSG for the first time in 50MP format, which in turn means applying two separate conversion values ​​to the analog signal sent to the digital pixels. In addition, the Smart-ISO Pro solution, which belongs to the HDR category, allows the combination of different levels of ISO readings at a single exposure, allowing the camera to capture 12.5 megapixel photos and 4K video clips at 60 fps with dynamic range. Higher HDR.
