Samsung is wasting no time with its S21 cut for 5G

No delay in production, unlike the iPhone, and even an advance in the release which traditionally occurs in February. Samsung unveiled this Thursday the contours and technical performance of the new generation of its three high-end smartphones, the S21.

Once again, the world’s leading seller is relying heavily on photos and video with innovations in the form of retouching.

Less than a year after the release of the S20s, the new terminals only arrive in 5G configuration and at slightly more affordable prices upon their release.

Samsung’s strategy appears to be to preempt the renewal market for users who want to switch to a device compatible with the 5th generation mobile network and its faster Internet. The S21 are also aimed at owners of S8 or S9 whose life cycle is coming to an end.

Let’s go straight into the details of the three models unveiled.

The S21, the steamroller?

Continuity in the quality of the finish and some improvements. Samsung has put the usual ingredients back into its flagship terminal. We find there the last house processor, the Exynos 2100, recently presented and engraved in 5 nm. This central component speeds up image processing and optimizes the smoothness of the screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

A tour of the news to start the day

This screen, in fact, remains large (6.2 inches) and almost borderless. As on the S20 or S20 FE, a front camera of 10 Megapixels is housed at the top in the center like a punch. It is obviously used for facial recognition, even if in these times of hidden exits, it is easier to use the fingerprint reader under the screen to unlock the phone.

It is on the back of the device that the difference materializes and is felt. The manufacturer tried to reduce the relief of the aluminum photo block as much as possible by fusing it into the frame and on the edge. Within the limits of the physical size of the three sensors.

So, from top to bottom, there is an ultra wide-angle sensor of 12 Megapixels (aperture of 2.2), a wide-angle of 12 Megapixels (1.8) and the main sensor of 64 Megapixels which incorporates an optical zoom X2.

The camera films in 8K (24 images / sec) and more generally in 4K (60 images / sec). It has a 4000 mAh battery.

In a clearly sclerotic high-end market, sales of S20 have never really taken off according to several studies. The mid-range drove Samsung’s sales upwards and the average purchase price skyrocketed.

Available in gray, white, purple or pink, the S21 starts at 859 euros in its 128 GB / 8 GB of RAM version and goes up to 909 euros to have 256 GB of storage. As a reminder, the S20 (5G) started at 1,009 euros.

The brand’s strategists have therefore adapted the prices. With all the same some technical concessions in passing, such as the choice of a reinforced plastic back on this model instead of the glass which generally accompanies smartphones at these prices. In hand, the difference is hardly noticeable. It will be sold to make volume.

S21 +, bigger and more autonomous

The screen reaches 6.7 inches, the battery holds 4800mAh and it weighs 30g more (202g). The game of 7 technical differences with the basic model ends there. The rear camera system follows the same logic with a 64-megapixel main sensor.

These are the prices and colors that change. No model in white and pink. The S21 + passes the 1000 euros mark with 1059 euros for the 128GB / 8GB version and 1109 euros for 256GB.

The S21 Ultra, the jewel in the crown

A true pocket camera with rare firepower. The S21 Ultra has all the attributes already stated of its little brothers and add a formidable camera system.

Its 6.8-inch screen (at 120 Hz) already incorporates a 40 Megapixel front sensor for incredible selfies of purity or meetings on Zoom in all conditions.

On the back of the device, the user can juggle between the four sensors to immortalize a scene. The first of 12 Megapixels takes care of ultra wide angle photos, another of 10 Megapixels serves as a telephoto lens thanks to its X10 optical zoom. The main sensor is 108 Megapixels although it works by default as a 12 MP. Finally, the last of 10 Megapixels focuses on a single job: zooming in X3.

The set, which may seem somewhat massive, is accompanied by a focusing laser and obviously a flash.

What to take advantage of, the new software options of the S21 such as the possibility of recording the two images captured at the front and at the back to indulge in Vlogging for example. But also the Director mode which allows you to preview the filmed image and to juggle between the different sensors and angles.

This S21 Ultra becomes compatible with the S-Pen stylus reserved until now for the models of the Note range.

The Gorilla Glass 7 glass back houses a 5000mAh battery.

Available in black and silver, the prices of the Ultra start at 1259 euros for 12GB / 128GB (1309 euros for 256GB) and go up to the monster format of 16GB / 512GB sold at … 1439 euros.

Pre-orders are acceptable as of Thursday and arrival in store is scheduled for January 29.
