It has probably never been so loud in a football stadium when the opponent kicked off the second half. At the game between the universities of Missouri and Vanderbilt, however, the few approved fans caused a lot of noise. The reason: History is being written right before your eyes. Because the kickoff is carried out by Sarah Fuller, the first woman to appear in a top division of college football.

Sarah Fuller normally does not wear a helmet or shoulder protection, but goalie gloves: She is the goalkeeper of the women’s football team at Vanderbilt University, with which she recently won the championship. But because all the players on the football team at their university had to be quarantined because of Corona, Fuller was asked for a trial training session.

There she was able to convince, then she was nominated for the game as a kicker. Not to set an example, but because it was the best option, as coach Derek Mason emphasized.

But she had to wait for her commitment until the beginning of the second half before she was allowed to perform the kickoff – up until then her defeated teammates had not scored a single time, so a kick was not possible. And she didn’t just kick the egg far away, but placed it close to the sidelines. This made it impossible for the opponent to pick up the ball and gain space.

The message in the helmet

She was very calm when she came on the field, she said after the game. «The final with the soccer team was more stressful. But I was very excited. ” With her commitment she wants to send a message to girls everywhere: “You can do whatever you want to do. With this mentality you can achieve great things. ” The message that she wants to carry out into the world is written on her helmet: “Play Like a Girl.”

A clear message to the world: Sarah Fuller wrote a piece of sports history with her commitment in college football.

And former NFL kicker Pat McAfee explained why the kick was perfect. He wrote: “The first person to do something is incredibly rare these days and really cool.”

The well-wishers weren’t just celebrities from the football scene. Fuller also made a good impression with the greats of US football: Carli Lloyd described the performance as unbelievable, and the former national goalkeeper Hope Solo encouraged her to continue. And from Megan Rapinoe, the pioneer for women in sport, there were three smileys with heart-shaped eyes as a reward for the historic appearance.
