Schools in Argentina wait with coffee for students who arrive drunk from “last first day” parties | Society

Several trans-Andean schools seem to have resigned themselves to the fact that their students arrive to class in a drunken state after the celebrations of the “last first day”, for this reason, they have now opted to wait for them with a cup of coffee or send them home if they do not arrive in good condition.

The parties of the “last first day” of classes in Argentina are a tradition that has become so firmly established among trans-Andean youth that academics already seem to be resigned to their students arriving drunk.

For this reason, several establishments in Bahía Blanca decided to apply various measures to receive their students in such conditions: entry two hours later, a cup of coffee or call their parents to pick them up and thus improve their condition.

“The Last First Day”

The initiative was taken within the framework of the celebrations for the “Last First Day” (UPD), characterized, among other things, by excessive alcohol consumption by students.

“There are many schools that are preparing coffee and that they do it with the families,” explained Claudio Martini, Region 22 Chief Inspector of Education, in dialogue with the Bahía Hoy radio program.

In this regard, he explained that the measure is so that students “do not remain in the conditions in which they find themselves” when they arrive at educational institutions, as collected Profile.

“This practice (the UPD) was installed about five years ago and I see the celebrations well, but not the excess with consumption. It’s good for young people to meet and go dancing, that’s for sure. But tomorrow they arrive as we know they arrive, that is real, ”she said.

And he added: “It is not receiving the boys with a bugle or a maraca, but it is not leaving them out either. The school puts its best version to receive them as they come, it is not necessary to generalize, it is not that all the youth have the same practice”.

Other measures to receive drunk students

In addition to the reception with coffee, the school authorities explained that they will determine, together with the parents, who are in a position to remain in the school. In case of being in a drunken state, the students will be withdrawn by their relatives and they will return to their homes.

In this regard, the Chief Inspector was against denying students entry.

“It seems good to me to receive the students and offer them a care practice. They have a place at the school for sixth grade boys. We cannot deny him entry, this minor must be channeled and call the family because he is in potential danger. And it is not an isolated case, when something is cultural, there is nothing left but to incorporate it, ”she said.

Along these lines, he considered that it is necessary to “continue working with families as we have been doing, raising awareness and caring.”

He also stated that the responsibility of caring for adolescents belongs to their families, since “the school cannot take charge” of the way they celebrate.

“We try to give the best answer, I don’t know if it’s the best. The responsibility of what happens during the night belongs to the family, the school cannot take charge of how the students face the festivities, ”he argued in this regard.

Likewise, in dialogue with Radio Urbana, Martini explained that each school will take different measures, adapted to the “situation” of its students: “Tomorrow morning all the schools in the Province will open and there are different proposals for the children: receive them with a breakfast, that they enter with the families, that they enter an hour or two later. There is no one with more knowledge of the situation of the boys than the directors of each school. Each community is different and is organized differently, we cannot homogenize all the schools in the city and the region”.
