Game news Sea of Thieves Misty Isles: A new start for pirates?
On January 27, the Rare teams wished their fans a happy new year by revealing to them the future novelties of Sea of Thieves. Equipped with a long presentation video as well as a detailed roadmap, Joe Neate (executive producer) and Mike Chapman (creative director) had mentioned the arrival of new Adventures which would give pirates the possibility of shaping the future of the ‘universe. The first episode “Misty Islands” was released on February 17. So, is it a fresh start for Microsoft’s game-service?
Atmosphere
Before the arrival of the big update of season six which will integrate the forts sailors, more content for the legendary pirates, and the arrival of the Mysteries (investigations containing elements of ARG), the universe of Sea of Thieves has been hosting a very special element since February 17. This is the first episode of an epic whose plot will unfold throughout the year 2002. The principle is simple: players only have two weeks to complete special events called Adventures. These limited-time quests will give some the chance to make choices that will forever change the Sea of Thieves. “Will you choose to fight for good or for evil? Do you want to fight to save the sea from thieves or do you want to pursue this plan to conquer it?” Mike Chapman told us during a videoconference.

The first Adventure, entitled “misty islands”, begins after a conversation with Larinna. The latter tells us that something has happened to Golden Sands, an outpost particularly popular with pirates. After a few minutes at sea to approach the islet, one thing is clear. Heavy fog now encompasses several locations in the Shores of Plenty and the Wilds. Once you arrive at Golden Sands, the atmosphere is no longer the same compared to that of a few weeks ago. The merchants have disappeared, the atmosphere is oppressive, and the tavern is silent as death. On one of the tables is a strange compass. She indicates a direction to follow with her boat. This is the starting point that will lead players to meet the enigmatic Belle for a mission that takes about two hours.
The big adventure?
This first limited-time episode aims to lay the groundwork for the episodic content of 2022. What is certain is that the simple objectives to follow thanks to the absence of puzzles should allow players unaccustomed to Sea of Thieves to progress smoothly, unlike some Fables Here, all you have to do is follow the direction of an enchanted compass, locate misty places, face waves of opponents while lighting braziers and identify an island using a map.. As often in the title of Rare, the most complicated to manage comes from the phases at sea where other players can chase us, when it is not a question of a megalodon, a skeleton ship, or worse, the kraken (what happened to us during the trip). The progression is classic: there are no secret temples full of traps or original mechanics. But the atmosphere that emanates from the islands lost in the fog is rather nice.
The simplicity of the mission and the fact that the plot starts on a new basis make this adventure a good starting point for newcomers. However, it remains to be seen what choices players will be able to make in the future, and how these will actually influence the world of Sea of Thieves. Attention, like some old updates, some bugs are still in the game. During our adventure, it was impossible to validate a chapter because of a script problem (returning the skull of bad luck to Belle). We had to restart the quest and go back to the mysterious pirate to unlock us. For your information, completing the Misty Isles grants the Misty Compass as a reward as well as a new title.
Sea of Thieves is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. The sixth season will arrive in March 2022. The “Misty Islands” adventure is available today.
