“She is unlikely to remember me”

Since the start of 2021, Shauni Denolf knew that she had ovarian cancer, but preferred to take the news with humor, explaining to our colleagues from Nieuwsblad: “It doesn’t smell good, lol! »

And while the cancer usually grows slowly, giving a life expectancy of 10 years after diagnosis, that was not the case for Shauni. Last July, the young mother of a 3.5-year-old girl learned that she only had a few weeks to live.

And it was Myla-June, her daughter, who mainly occupied Shauni’s mind during these difficult times: “She is unlikely to remember me accurately. How can I be sure that she won’t forget me? I wrote her letters, when she meets her first love, when she gets married, when she has a baby. I bought him presents for his first day at school, for his 16th birthday, etc. I hope that will be enough. The mother also planted a tree in her garden, so that her daughter can go and collect herself whenever she wants to have a moment with her mother, without having to go to the cemetery.

“We had time to say goodbye. To tell us everything we felt. I know what I want people to say at my funeral, that I lived a good life and that I was happy to be so well surrounded, ”confided the mother. This Monday, she left surrounded by her family. She will be buried on Saturday and has asked that no one wear black, only bright blue clothes. Instead of flowers, Shauni wishes “dreams and wishes for Myla-June.”
