Italy’s ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (83, Forza Italia) is facing a prison sentence after years of investigations into his slippery “Bunga Bunga” parties.
The Siena public prosecutor’s office sees him convicted of bribing witnesses, and demands four years and two months’ imprisonment for the politician, who has already been convicted of tax fraud. At that time he applied for exemption from imprisonment because of his age, instead he gave social classes in a retirement home.
The former head of government is accused of having bought the silence of the witnesses between 2011 and 2015 with a total of ten million euros. Most recently it was revealed that he paid pianist Danilo Mariani for making a misstatement in an earlier process involving sex parties in Berlusconi’s villa.
The pianist Mariani had provided musical entertainment at the events near Milan known as “Bunga Bunga Parties”. The legal dispute over the parties was particularly controversial as to whether Berlusconi knew that the Moroccan dancer Karima al-Mahroug aka “Ruby Rubacuori” (Ruby heart thief) was not yet of legal age at the time. The 83-year-old was accused of having paid Ruby for sex.
Spicy: When the police picked up Ruby, Berlusconi asked for her release – on the grounds that she was Mubarak’s granddaughter.
Little by little the wild parties in Berlusconi’s Milan villa moved into legal circles. Berlusconi was then (2010) head of government.
In the first trial for the 2013 sex parties, Berlusconi was initially convicted, but was acquitted in the 2015 appeal process. The court had accepted in his favor that Berlusconi had not known that Ruby was only 17 years old.
In the course of the investigation, the dancer had made highly contradictory and ultimately exonerating statements. Suspected reason: According to the prosecutor’s files, media billionaire Berlusconi alone paid her seven million euros in hush money.
