The glacier that broke off is part of the Marmolada mountain and is located in the Dolomites mountain range. The collapse was near Punta Rocca, on the ascent route of the normal route to reach the summit, as specified.

The collapse generated a flow of ice debris in a front of about three hundred meters and within that section there were several “senderistas”.

“All the mountain rescue teams in the area have been activated and the first injured have already been recovered,” confirmed Gianpaolo Bottacin, head of Civil Protection for the Veneto Region.

The Italian media reported that at this time, 5 helicopters – via Veneto and Trentino – fly over the area of the collapse.

In addition, several canine units from the Trentino area traveled to the place where the natural disaster occurred in order to find several people who had not yet been rescued: in principle, there are 10 missing.

It was also reported that several of the people who were making excursions were rescued, but the six people who lost their lives mourned. In fact, several of the bodies would have been extracted from the mass of ice.

Among the hypotheses offered by some specialists, it is believed that the detachment is due to the temperature peaks that are occurring in that area of Italy: This Saturday, the Marmolada temperature record was reached, with about 10 degrees at the top .
