South Korean director Bong Joon-ho to chair the 2021 jury

The 78th edition of Venice Festival will take place from September 1-11, 2021, organizers announced on Friday. “Director Bong Joon-ho will chair the international jury of the competition for the 78th Venice International Film Festival, which will award the Golden Lion for Best Film and other official prizes.”, specifies the press release of the Mostra.

“The Venice Film Festival has a long history, and I am honored to be associated with its wonderful cinematographic tradition”, reacted the multi-award-winning director, quoted in the press release. “As president of the jury, and above all as an incorrigible cinephile, I am ready to admire and applaud all the great films selected by the festival. I am filled with sincere joy and hope.”

The artistic director of the Mostra, Alberto Barbera, greeted “the great Korean director”, who is “today one of the most authentic and original voices of auteur cinema worldwide”. “I am very grateful to him for having accepted to put his passion as an attentive, curious and prejudiced film buff at the service of our festival”, he estimated.

With Parasite, Bong Joon-ho won the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, then in 2020 four Oscars (best original screenplay, best international film, best director, and best film) and the César for best foreign film. He is also the author of Barking Dog (2000), Memories of a murder (2003), The Transperceneige (2013) and Okay (2017).
